Govt Tightens Monitoring of Civil Servants’ Social Media Accounts
ISLAMABAD: The government has intensified monitoring of civil servants’ personal social media accounts under the Civil Servants Conduct Rules 2026, according to official sources.
Under the new framework, officials’ personal activity on platforms such as social media, websites, blogs, podcasts, television and other digital media will fall under conduct regulations. Officials accused of promoting anti-government content or narratives could face scrutiny and disciplinary action.
Sources said action may also be taken against civil servants using anonymous or fake accounts to allegedly defame the government or state institutions.
The rules also restrict officials from using personal social media accounts to promote official activities for publicity or personal branding. The government may seek details of both official and personal accounts operated by civil servants.
Official government social media accounts will require prior written approval and will be limited to publishing verified government information and official activities.
The framework further requires officials leaving their posts to hand over official social media accounts, including login credentials, archived data and administrative access, to their successors.
Officials have also been directed not to publish opinions or information contrary to government policy or the official government position. Violations of the conduct rules could lead to departmental disciplinary action.
The move reflects the government’s growing focus on regulating the digital conduct of public servants and ensuring that official communication remains consistent with government policy.
