Nepal-China Floods: Death Toll Rises as Hundreds Remain Missing

Kathmandu: A catastrophic flooding disaster has struck the Himalayan border region between Nepal and China’s Tibet, leaving at least 162 people dead and hundreds still unaccounted for.

According to reports, Nepal has recorded 159 deaths, while three people have been confirmed dead in Tibet. Authorities in Tibet said 265 people remain missing, while more than 400 foreign tourists are also reportedly unaccounted for following the disaster.

The devastating floods were triggered by the collapse of glacial ice and rocks, sending a powerful torrent of mud, debris and water through mountainous communities. The sudden surge caused widespread destruction, sweeping away homes, roads and bridges and disrupting transport and communication links in the affected areas.

Rescue teams are continuing operations to locate missing people and assist those stranded by the floods. Difficult mountainous terrain and damaged infrastructure are making rescue and relief efforts challenging.

The disaster has raised fresh concerns about the vulnerability of Himalayan communities to extreme weather events and the risks posed by rapidly changing glacial conditions.

Authorities on both sides of the border are assessing the scale of the destruction, while rescue operations remain underway as families await information about missing relatives.
