Devastating Floods in Nepal: Death Toll Rises to 1,050

Thousands remain missing as rescue teams continue operations in remote areas

Kathmandu: Devastating floods and a glacier collapse in Nepal have caused widespread destruction, with the death toll rising to 1,050, while around 4,000 people remain missing.

According to foreign news agencies, rescue workers have begun using heavy machinery, helicopters and excavators to search for missing people and rescue those trapped in affected areas.

Special rescue teams from China, India and Nepal are constructing temporary bridges to reach remote areas. Rescue workers are also using excavators in efforts to safely evacuate around 300 workers trapped inside tunnels.

According to Nepal’s Disaster Management Authority, at least 639 people remain trapped at damaged hydropower stations. Authorities said that 583 foreign nationals are among those still missing.

The disaster occurred on August 26, when a glacier collapse triggered a massive flow of ice, rocks and mud in the border region between Nepal and China, causing extensive destruction.

According to preliminary estimates by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the disaster has generated at least 2.2 million tonnes of debris, including building rubble, rocks and soil.

Rescue and relief agencies are continuing operations in the affected areas and intensifying efforts to locate missing people. Authorities fear that the death toll could rise further as rescue teams gain access to remote and heavily damaged areas.
