Germany opportunity card: how Pakistanis can move to Germany without a job offer
ISLAMABAD: Germany’s Opportunity Card, known as the Chancenkarte, offers qualified and skilled workers from non-EU countries, including Pakistan, a legal pathway to enter Germany and search for employment without having a job offer in advance.
The Opportunity Card allows eligible applicants to stay in Germany for up to one year while looking for suitable employment.
Applicants who have a recognised university degree or vocational qualification may qualify as skilled workers. Those whose foreign qualifications are not fully recognised in Germany may also be eligible through a points-based system.
In general, applicants using the points-based route need at least two years of recognised vocational training or a university degree, German language skills at A1 level or English language skills at B2 level, and a minimum of six points.
Points are awarded on the basis of several factors, including age, educational and professional qualifications, work experience, language skills and previous legal residence in Germany. Applicants under 35 years of age can receive two points, while those aged between 35 and 40 can receive one point.
Financial requirement in 2026
Applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to support themselves during their stay in Germany. In 2026, the required amount is at least €1,091 per month.
This financial requirement can generally be demonstrated through a blocked bank account, a declaration of commitment from an eligible sponsor or, in certain circumstances, a confirmed part-time job.
What can Opportunity Card holders do?
After entering Germany, Opportunity Card holders can work up to 20 hours per week in part-time employment. They can also complete a trial period of up to two weeks with a potential employer to explore suitable employment, apprenticeship or qualification opportunities.
However, finding a job does not automatically convert the Opportunity Card into a work permit. Before the card expires, holders must apply for an appropriate residence permit. Depending on their circumstances, this could include a skilled-worker residence permit or an EU Blue Card.
Applicants warned against fraud
Applicants have been advised to verify their educational and professional qualifications through the relevant German institutions and submit all required documents and proof of financial resources.
Authorities have also warned that the Opportunity Card does not guarantee employment, free accommodation or automatic financial assistance from the government. Pakistanis applying through this route should remain cautious of fake job offers, unverified blocked-account services and unauthorised agents promising guaranteed visas or approvals.
