Algeria announces end of diplomatic relations with UAE
ALGIERS: Algeria has announced its decision to sever diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), citing the failure of efforts to maintain bilateral ties, according to international media reports.
Algerian state television reported that the country had decided to cut diplomatic relations with the UAE after all avenues for preserving relations between the two countries had been exhausted.
Algeria has accused the UAE of interfering in its domestic affairs as well as playing a role in regional matters. The decision marks a major deterioration in relations between the two countries, which have experienced growing tensions in recent months.
As part of the diplomatic move, Algeria has reportedly given the UAE ambassador 48 hours to leave the country.
Tensions between Algeria and UAE
Relations between Algiers and Abu Dhabi have faced increasing strain over disagreements concerning regional affairs and the UAE’s alleged involvement in developments across the region.
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has repeatedly criticised the UAE in public statements. In previous remarks, he accused the country of attempting to influence or destabilise several countries in the region.
During a television interview in July, Tebboune, apparently referring to the UAE, said that wherever the country became involved, bloodshed followed. He also called for the UAE to stay away from Algeria, saying this would help prevent bloodshed in the country.
At the time, the Algerian president indicated that diplomatic relations could have been severed earlier, but Algeria had sought to avoid further divisions within the Arab world.
The latest announcement represents a significant shift in Algeria’s diplomatic policy toward the UAE and could have wider implications for relations between the two countries and their respective positions on regional issues.
