Gen Z Treats AI Like a Friend, New Study Finds

Young users increasingly turn to AI for personal and emotional support

LONDON: A new global study has revealed that many Gen Z users are treating artificial intelligence (AI) as more than just a tool for completing tasks, increasingly using it for personal advice and emotional support.

According to The Express Tribune report, a Kaspersky survey of 7,200 people found that 27% of Gen Z users interact with AI as if they were talking to a friend.

The study found that 28% of young users consult AI about personal issues they may hesitate to discuss with other people. This highlights the growing role of AI in providing companionship and support alongside information and practical assistance.

Nearly 47% of Gen Z respondents said they use AI daily or regularly, the highest rate among all age groups.

Young people use AI for a range of purposes, with 56% using it to find information, 49% for studying, 47% for generating ideas and 39% for work.

However, experts have warned that increased personal use of AI also brings privacy and security risks. Only 42% of Gen Z users regularly follow safety practices, such as verifying information through reliable sources and avoiding the sharing of confidential data.

Kaspersky expert Vladislav Tushkanov said Gen Z understands emerging AI trends better than other generations and is finding new ways to integrate the technology into everyday life.

Experts stressed that although AI conversations may feel personal, users should not assume they are completely private or always reliable. They should avoid sharing sensitive information and verify important information provided by AI.
