New Alpuri Bridge Construction Moves Forward as NHA Gives Shopkeepers 5 Days to Vacate

SHANGLA: The National Highway Authority (NHA) has issued five-day notices to shopkeepers operating near the old Alpuri Bridge, clearing the way for construction of a new steel bridge in the area.

According to the notices, shopkeepers have been directed to remove their businesses within five days. Construction work on the new bridge is expected to begin once the area is cleared.

The existing Alpuri Bridge, which dates back to the era of the Wali of Swat, has remained an important transportation link in Shangla for decades. However, the aging structure has deteriorated considerably, with cracks reported at several points.

The deteriorating condition of the bridge has raised safety concerns among residents and commuters, who fear that continued use of the damaged structure could pose serious risks.

Local traders have expressed willingness to cooperate with the NHA and vacate their shops to facilitate the construction project. However, they have urged authorities to begin construction immediately after the shops are cleared to minimise financial losses caused by disruption.

Residents have welcomed the NHA’s decision, saying the replacement of the old bridge with a new steel structure is urgently needed to improve road safety and connectivity in the region.

They have also called for proper traffic management and alternative routes during construction so that commuters and transporters do not face unnecessary difficulties.

The Alpuri Bridge is considered a key link for communities in central Shangla and surrounding areas. Its replacement is expected to improve transportation and provide safer access for local residents, businesses and travellers.

Locals have expressed hope that the five-day notices will be followed by immediate practical action and that construction of the new bridge will begin without further delay.
