China Opposes New US Sanctions on Iran, Calls for Diplomatic Solution
BEIJING: China has strongly opposed the latest round of US sanctions imposed on Iran, arguing that unilateral sanctions without authorization from the United Nations Security Council lack a proper basis under international law.
A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Beijing opposes the use of unilateral sanctions and urged all relevant parties to adopt a responsible approach to help reduce tensions and resolve disputes through political and diplomatic means.
The Chinese reaction came after the United States announced another package of sanctions targeting Iran’s financial networks. Washington says the measures are aimed at disrupting Iran’s so-called “shadow banking” system, which allegedly helps move and repatriate money generated through oil and other exports.
According to the US Treasury Department, the latest sanctions target a network of front companies, exchange houses and financial facilitators allegedly connected to Iranian banks. The United States considers these networks an important mechanism for helping Iran maintain access to international financial channels despite existing restrictions.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington intends to maintain what he described as the toughest sanctions campaign against Tehran. He also warned that countries and businesses continuing commercial relations with Iran could potentially face punitive measures.
China, however, has taken a different position, emphasizing respect for international law and diplomatic engagement. Beijing has repeatedly called for disputes involving Iran to be addressed through negotiations rather than escalating economic pressure.
The disagreement highlights the broader differences between China and the United States over the use of unilateral economic sanctions. While Washington views sanctions as a tool to pressure Iran and restrict financial networks it considers harmful, Beijing argues that such measures should not be imposed outside the framework of the United Nations Security Council.
China also called on all sides to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further increase regional tensions. Beijing’s position reflects its broader emphasis on diplomacy and political dialogue in dealing with international disputes.
The latest development could add another layer of tension to already complicated relations between Washington and Tehran. At the same time, China’s opposition indicates that Beijing is likely to continue advocating dialogue while maintaining its own economic and diplomatic engagement with Iran.
The dispute over the sanctions comes amid continuing international concerns over Iran’s economy, regional security and relations with Western powers.
