Drug Addicts Target CCTV Cameras in Peshawar’s Hayatabad

PESHAWAR: Residents of Hayatabad, one of Peshawar’s prominent residential areas, have raised concerns over a reported increase in thefts allegedly involving drug users targeting CCTV cameras, electricity meters, cables and other valuable equipment.

According to local residents, several incidents have been reported in different parts of Hayatabad, with CCTV cameras, electrical wires and other equipment allegedly being stolen. Pictures purportedly showing individuals suspected of involvement in the thefts have also circulated on social media.

In a recent incident at Bacha Khan Chowk, a man allegedly under the influence of drugs was reportedly caught attempting to cut an 11,000-volt electricity line in broad daylight. The incident raised further concerns among residents about the risks posed by such activities.

Residents said the problem is not limited to the theft of public and private infrastructure. They alleged that individuals involved in drug use have also been accused of snatching mobile phones and other belongings from citizens in different areas.

The reported incidents have created a growing sense of insecurity among local residents, particularly women and children who regularly move through the area. Residents have called for stronger security arrangements and effective action against those involved in theft and drug-related activities.

Hayatabad is considered one of Peshawar’s major residential and commercial areas, and the reported theft of surveillance equipment and electrical infrastructure has raised questions about security and monitoring in the locality.

Residents believe that the removal or damaging of CCTV cameras could further complicate efforts to identify suspects and prevent criminal activity. They have urged the relevant authorities to increase surveillance, improve patrolling and take action against individuals involved in theft and drug abuse.

They also called for measures to address drug addiction alongside law-enforcement action, saying that tackling the underlying issue could help reduce related crimes and improve public safety.

Authorities have yet to publicly provide details about arrests or a formal investigation into the reported incidents.

Residents hope that increased security measures and strict enforcement against theft and drug-related activities will help restore a sense of safety in Hayatabad and protect public and private property.
