Heavy Rain Hits Islamabad and Rawalpindi, Low-Lying Areas Flooded

More than 126mm of rain recorded in Rawalpindi, rain emergency declared and educational institutions closed

Heavy rainfall in Islamabad and Rawalpindi has flooded low-lying areas, with rainwater entering homes and shops at several locations.

More than 126mm of rain was recorded in Rawalpindi. The heavy downpour caused water levels in Nullah Lai to rise significantly, reaching 27.5 feet at Kattarian and 21.5 feet at Gawalmandi.

Danger sirens were sounded in areas surrounding Gawalmandi, while rainwater entered shops in Raja Bazaar, Jamia Masjid Road and Imam Bara Chowk. Several low-lying areas, including Arya Mohalla, Millat Colony, Javed Colony and Dhok Khabba, were also inundated.

Water accumulated on Chaudhry Road, Service Road Saddarabad, Dhok Kala Khan and Mochi Bazaar, causing difficulties for residents. The administration declared a rain emergency and directed residents of vulnerable low-lying areas to evacuate.

In view of the heavy rainfall, all public and private educational institutions in Rawalpindi were also closed.

Meanwhile, in Islamabad’s Sector G-14, the roof of a house collapsed, killing one person and injuring another after they were trapped under the debris. A school wall also collapsed at Mabeen Market in Aabpara, although no casualties were reported. Removal of the debris is underway.

The Meteorological Department has forecast further rainfall in various parts of Punjab over the next 24 hours as part of the eighth monsoon spell.
