NEPRA Directs K-Electric to Immediately Stop Unannounced Load Shedding

Regulator orders K-Electric to ensure uninterrupted power supply to consumers

Karachi: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has directed K-Electric to immediately stop unscheduled and unnecessary load shedding and ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply to all consumers.

NEPRA made it clear that load shedding based on line losses and poor bill recovery is illegal, directing K-Electric to immediately stop disconnecting entire feeders on the basis of losses.

The regulator said that electricity theft or non-payment by some consumers cannot be punished by cutting power to consumers who regularly pay their bills. It emphasized that regular consumers should not face unjustified load shedding.

NEPRA further directed K-Electric to adopt alternative measures to address electricity theft and system losses. Action should be taken against defaulters and individuals involved in electricity theft instead of shutting down entire feeders.

The authority also ordered K-Electric to accelerate its crackdown against electricity theft and strengthen coordination with law enforcement agencies to ensure effective legal action against those involved.

NEPRA instructed K-Electric to prepare a phased and time-bound plan to reduce system losses and improve the overall efficiency of its electricity distribution network.

The regulator stressed that K-Electric has a legal responsibility to provide electricity to all consumers without discrimination and ensure that paying customers are not subjected to unnecessary power outages.

The latest directives come amid continued complaints from consumers regarding unscheduled load shedding and prolonged power outages in different parts of Karachi.

NEPRA’s instructions are aimed at protecting regular electricity consumers while ensuring that action against electricity theft and defaulters is taken through targeted measures rather than widespread power cuts.

K-Electric will now be required to implement the regulator’s directives and take concrete steps toward reducing losses, improving recovery and ensuring reliable electricity supply to consumers.
