Govt Considers Daily Petroleum Price Adjustment System
ISLAMABAD: The government is considering introducing a new system that would allow petroleum prices to be adjusted daily, reducing direct government involvement in fuel price decisions, according to a senior Petroleum Division official.
Under the proposed mechanism, prices of petroleum products could be revised on a daily basis in response to changes in market conditions. The move would mark a potential shift from the existing pricing arrangement and could make domestic fuel prices more responsive to fluctuations in international oil markets.
Currently, petroleum prices in Pakistan are reviewed at regular intervals, taking into account several factors, including global crude oil prices, exchange rate movements, taxes, levies and other relevant costs. The proposed system could allow these changes to be reflected in domestic prices more frequently.
If implemented, the daily adjustment mechanism could result in more frequent increases or decreases in petrol and diesel prices, depending on market trends and other pricing factors. Consumers may therefore see changes in fuel prices more regularly than under the existing arrangement.
The proposal is also aimed at reducing the government’s direct role in determining fuel prices, potentially giving market-based factors a greater influence over the pricing process. However, the details of the proposed mechanism, including the formula for calculating daily prices and the extent of regulatory oversight, have not yet been finalised.
Petroleum prices play a significant role in Pakistan’s economy, affecting transportation, agriculture, manufacturing and the overall cost of goods and services. Changes in petrol prices directly influence the travel expenses of motorists and motorcyclists, while diesel prices affect freight transport, public transportation and agricultural machinery.
More frequent price adjustments could allow changes in international oil markets to be passed on to consumers more quickly. However, the actual impact would depend on how the proposed system is designed and implemented, as well as the prevailing global oil prices and exchange rate.
The proposal comes amid continued attention to fuel pricing and its implications for household budgets and business costs. Any shift towards daily pricing would require a clear mechanism to ensure transparency and consistent implementation.
For now, the government is considering the proposal, and no final decision or implementation date has been announced. Further details are expected once the relevant authorities finalise the proposed framework.
