Pakistan and Google Sign MoU to Boost AI, Digital Skills and Technology Growth

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Google have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand cooperation in digital skills, artificial intelligence and technology-driven economic growth, as the government aims to build a $30 billion digital economy by 2030.

The agreement, signed in the presence of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, covers several areas including AI, digital government services, agriculture, digital payments, app development and gaming.

Under the partnership, Google plans to provide 150,000 Google Career Certificates to Pakistani youth in 2026. The programme will focus on practical, market-oriented skills to improve employment opportunities in the technology sector.

Google will also explore providing students with access to advanced AI tools, including one-year free access to Google AI Plus and Gemini Notebook. A Google AI Centre of Excellence in Islamabad will also be established to train young people and develop a workforce capable of competing in international technology markets.

The partnership will further support the use of AI in government operations, including assistance to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) in improving tax administration and public services. AI-based solutions will also be explored in agriculture for crop monitoring, yield forecasting and sustainable farming.

Pakistan and Google will also work to support local app developers and gaming studios, strengthen digital payments and expand digital trade. A joint task force will identify opportunities to increase IT exports and attract investment in technology services and hardware manufacturing.

The agreement marks a significant step toward strengthening Pakistan’s digital economy and creating new opportunities for its young and growing technology workforce.
