Peshawar Flour Crisis: Daily Quota Set at 7,630 Bags

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has increased efforts to control flour prices and maintain supplies across the province amid concerns over rising prices and shortages. Officials said the provincial government is releasing 2,000 metric tonnes of wheat daily, with Peshawar receiving a designated share of the supply.

According to Peshawar Rationing Controller Aftab Umar, the provincial capital is currently receiving 218 metric tonnes of wheat every day. The allocated wheat is used by flour mills to produce around 2,180 bags of flour, which are subsequently converted into approximately 7,630 bags weighing 20 kilograms each for distribution among consumers through designated dealers.

Officials said the officially approved daily distribution target for Peshawar stands at 7,630 bags. However, flour mills are currently issuing an average of around 7,767 bags per day, which is higher than the prescribed quota.

Aftab Umar explained that the additional distribution is linked to pending quantities at some flour mills. According to him, flour that could not be distributed during the previous one or two days is being added to the current quota, resulting in a higher overall number of bags being supplied to dealers.

The additional flour is being distributed among dealers in different parts of Peshawar in an effort to clear the backlog and ensure that consumers receive adequate supplies.

Flour distribution is continuing across several major areas of the provincial capital, including Chamkani, Rampura, Dalazak Road, Kabootar Chowk, Shah Alam, Barhni Pul, Charsadda Road, Ring Road, Badaber, Pashtakhara, Bara Mani, Warsak Road, Faqirabad, Board Bazaar, Town, Saddar, GT Road and Achini, as well as surrounding areas.

The government’s wheat release and regulated distribution mechanism come at a time when flour prices have come under pressure in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Officials say the measures are intended to improve availability, prevent supply disruptions and help keep prices under control.

The daily wheat release is also aimed at ensuring that flour mills have sufficient raw material to maintain production and that the available flour reaches consumers through the designated distribution network.

Authorities are monitoring the supply situation and distribution process in Peshawar, while the additional release of flour is expected to help address pending supplies and reduce pressure on consumers.

With the daily quota fixed at 7,630 bags, officials hope the regulated system will contribute to maintaining a steady supply of 20-kilogram flour bags in the provincial capital and help stabilize the local market.
