Heavy rain, thunderstorms forecast across KP from Sept 12 to 17
PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a weather alert, forecasting rain, strong winds and thunderstorms across several districts of the province from September 12 to 17.
According to the PDMA advisory, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said monsoon currents are entering the upper parts of the country, while a westerly wave is expected to enter the region during the weekend and strengthen on September 14.
Rain and thunderstorms, with isolated heavy downpours and hailstorms, are expected in Upper and Lower Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Malakand, Bajaur, Upper and Lower Kohistan, Battagram, Torghar, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Mardan, Swabi, Khyber, Mohmand, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Kohat, Kurram, Hangu, Orakzai, Karak, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, North Waziristan and South Waziristan.
The PDMA warned of possible landslides in vulnerable areas of Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra, Kohistan and Abbottabad.
Heavy rainfall may also trigger flash floods in local streams and nullahs, particularly from September 14 to 17. Urban flooding is also possible in low-lying areas of Peshawar, Mardan and Swabi.
The PDMA directed district administrations to take precautionary measures in vulnerable areas, monitor rivers and streams, clear drainage systems and ensure the availability of emergency supplies.
Rescue 1122 teams have also been directed to remain prepared for emergency response.
The authority advised citizens and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather, stay away from rivers and streams, and avoid crossing flooded roads and bridges.
Citizens can report emergencies to the PDMA Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Emergency Operations Centre through toll-free helpline 1700.
