KP govt announces 15% increase in stipends for house officers and TMOs
PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced a 15% increase in the monthly stipends of House Officers and Trainee Medical Officers (TMOs), along with a 5% annual increase in the stipend every year.
According to a notification issued by the KP Finance Department, the current payable stipend of House Officers and TMOs has been increased by 15%. The revised stipend will be effective from July 1, 2026, and will apply to the amount being paid under the notification issued on July 12, 2021.
Under the new decision, the provincial government has also approved a 5% annual increase in the stipend. The yearly increase will be calculated on the then-payable amount while remaining subject to the existing terms and conditions.
The decision follows the approval given during the 56th meeting of the KP Provincial Cabinet held on August 12, 2026. Following the cabinet decision, the Finance Department issued the notification and directed relevant institutions to implement the increase immediately.
All autonomous, semi-autonomous and Medical Teaching Institutions across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including institutions in Peshawar, have been informed about the decision. The concerned institutions have also been directed to ensure payment of the revised stipend to eligible doctors.
The announcement comes amid a province-wide protest by young doctors over salary and other service-related issues. The Young Doctors Association (YDA) had demanded a significantly higher increase, arguing that doctors’ salaries have not received a major revision since 2016 despite persistent inflation.
YDA representatives have demanded a 40% to 50% increase in salaries, along with an increase in the house officer and TMO accommodation allowance from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 30,000. They are also seeking a share from Sehat Card Plus income, recruitment against vacant posts through the Public Service Commission and job security for faculty members working in MTI hospitals.
As part of their protest, doctors established a camp outside the Health Secretariat and warned of phased suspension of OPD services and elective surgeries if their demands are not addressed. However, emergency services are expected to continue.
The protesting doctors have also warned of expanding their demonstrations to the Chief Minister Secretariat and the offices of the health and finance departments, with doctors from Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, Hazara and other districts participating in the protest.
