Mumtazay Case Takes New Turn as Police Reveal Key Details of Attack

Peshawar: An initial investigation into the attack on a police party transporting wanted suspect Mumtaz alias Mumtazay has revealed significant details. Police said around 10 attackers were involved in the assault.

According to police, the attackers first targeted the tyres of the vehicle carrying Mumtaz before opening fire on police vehicles with small and heavy weapons. The attackers also threw a hand grenade at the police vehicle.

Mumtaz was being transported from Islamabad Airport to Daudzai Police Station in a vehicle belonging to DSP Chamkani when the attack took place on the Northern Bypass.

During the assault, police were shifting Mumtaz to another vehicle when an exchange of fire broke out between the attackers and police personnel. Two station house officers (SHOs) sustained serious injuries during the attack.

Police said they retaliated and killed Mumtaz alias Mumtazay along with two alleged attackers. The two attackers were identified as Syed Nawab and Ali Khan, according to SSP Operations Farhan Khan.

Police said both men were wanted in several cases registered at different police stations.

According to investigators, the attackers were heard saying they were taking revenge from Mumtaz for allegedly providing information against the Lali gang. Police believe the attack was linked to an alleged rivalry over informant-related matters.

SSP Operations Farhan Khan said the two motorcycles allegedly used in the attack had been snatched from the Faqirabad and Chamkani areas. He added that the attack on Mumtaz and the police party was allegedly planned by a cousin of the Lali gang.

Police said Mumtaz had been brought from Islamabad Airport to Daudzai Police Station and was wearing a bulletproof jacket due to security concerns.

After completion of the necessary legal formalities, the bodies of the two deceased alleged attackers were handed over to their families. Further investigation into the incident is underway.
