Over 2.1 Million Smart Meters Installed Across Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: More than 2.1 million smart electricity meters have been installed across Pakistan as part of efforts to modernize the country’s power distribution system and improve the monitoring of electricity consumption.
According to a written reply submitted by the Ministry of Energy to the Senate, a total of 2,125,296 smart meters have so far been installed by various electricity distribution companies across the country. The initiative is aimed at improving meter-reading systems, providing more accurate consumption data and making electricity distribution more efficient.
The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has installed the largest number of smart meters among the distribution companies, with 1,153,556 units installed to date. Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) stands second with 348,135 smart meters, while Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) has installed 229,719 units.
Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has installed 119,372 smart meters, while Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) has completed the installation of 111,948 meters.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Peshawar Electric Power Company (PESCO) has installed 60,685 smart meters, according to the Ministry of Energy. Meanwhile, K-Electric has installed 50,599 units.
The installation figures from other distribution companies are comparatively lower. Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) has installed 19,620 smart meters, followed by Sukkur Electric Power Company (SEPCO) with 13,432.
Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) has installed 9,194 smart meters, while Hazara Electric Power Company (HAZECO) has installed 7,659 units. The Tribal Areas Electric Supply Company (TESCO) has so far installed 1,377 smart meters, according to the ministry’s data.
Smart meters are designed to provide electricity companies with more accurate and timely information about consumer usage. Unlike conventional meters, smart metering technology can support improved monitoring of consumption and reduce dependence on manual meter-reading processes.
The Ministry of Energy said the expansion of smart metering would help improve electricity consumption monitoring, enhance the meter-reading mechanism and increase efficiency across the power distribution network.
The technology is also expected to provide electricity companies with more reliable consumption data, potentially helping them identify unusual usage patterns and improve billing accuracy.
The nationwide rollout of smart meters comes as Pakistan continues efforts to improve the efficiency and transparency of its electricity distribution system. However, the effectiveness of the initiative will depend on proper implementation, reliable technology and the ability of power distribution companies to effectively use the data generated by the new meters.
With millions of meters already installed, the government’s next challenge will be to expand the system further and ensure that consumers across the country benefit from more accurate billing and improved electricity services.
