Public gatherings banned in Islamabad amid PTI long march
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad district administration has imposed Section 144 across the federal capital, prohibiting public gatherings and assemblies amid the ongoing political situation linked to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) long march towards Islamabad.
According to the administration, gatherings of all kinds are prohibited under the restrictions currently in force. Officials have also referred to the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act 2024, warning that violations could lead to strict legal action.
The administration has urged citizens to comply with the law, avoid participating in prohibited activities and cooperate with security agencies to maintain peace and public order in the capital.
Under the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act 2024, violations may carry a prison sentence of up to three years, according to the administration’s statement. Authorities have stressed that residents should follow the restrictions and avoid activities that could disrupt public order.
The restrictions come as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi leads a PTI long march towards Islamabad. The party is demanding the release of former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan, who remains in jail.
The march began in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on October 5 and has travelled through several locations. According to KP Information Minister Shafi Jan, the convoy is scheduled to leave Charsadda for Mardan late Saturday night, where participants are expected to stay overnight before continuing their journey.
The march has added to political activity surrounding the PTI’s demands and its efforts to mobilise supporters. The Islamabad administration’s restrictions are intended to prevent unauthorised gatherings and maintain security in the federal capital.
Authorities have reiterated their appeal for public cooperation, advising residents to remain mindful of the restrictions and follow official instructions. Citizens have also been urged to avoid activities that could lead to legal consequences.
The situation is being closely watched as the PTI convoy continues its journey towards Islamabad. Further developments will depend on the march’s progress and any subsequent decisions by the relevant authorities.
