First Meeting of Opposition Grand Alliance Held in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: The first meeting of the opposition grand alliance was held in Islamabad, where participants expressed support for Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s recent statement and agreed that a peaceful constitutional struggle is the only way to seek the release of incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan.

PTI leaders said they did not want Imran Khan to be released through any unconstitutional means. They maintained that if the alliance is aimed at ensuring the supremacy of the Constitution, they would support it, but they would not become part of any alliance designed to blackmail anyone or serve personal interests.

According to sources, Maulana Fazlur Rehman told participants that after Imran Khan was jailed, he had advised his workers to avoid discussing him. He said the opposition wanted the constitutional release of all prisoners and stressed that political forces would have to come forward to help the country overcome its current difficulties.

However, sources also reported differences within PTI over the proposed alliance. Some PTI members reportedly expressed reservations about working with Maulana Fazlur Rehman, citing his past political role.

According to sources, some PTI leaders told Fazlur Rehman that while they disagreed with his previous role, they wanted to leave the past behind and move forward.

Meanwhile, several parliamentarians from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab are reportedly reluctant to proceed with the alliance under Fazlur Rehman’s leadership. Some lawmakers have also held him responsible for the imprisonment of PTI founder Imran Khan.

The meeting comes amid efforts by opposition parties to build a broader political platform around constitutional supremacy and democratic rights.
