Suzuki e Sky Unveiled as Brand’s First All-Electric Kei Car
TOKYO: Suzuki has officially unveiled its first all-electric kei car, the e Sky, in Japan as the company expands its electric vehicle lineup. The compact EV is scheduled to go on sale in Japan this autumn and is expected to enter the UK market in 2027.
The Suzuki e Sky has been designed to comply with Japan’s strict kei car regulations governing vehicle dimensions and performance. Measuring just 3,395mm long and 1,475mm wide, the compact EV is significantly smaller than rivals such as the Renault Twingo, while its tall and boxy design is aimed at maximizing interior space.
Suzuki says the vehicle will accommodate up to four passengers. Although the company has yet to release full technical specifications, reports indicate that the Japanese-market model could feature a 26kWh battery and deliver a range of up to 193 miles on a single charge.
Under Japan’s kei car regulations, the e Sky is expected to be limited to around 63bhp, with power likely supplied by a front-mounted electric motor. DC fast charging is reportedly expected to support up to 50kW, potentially allowing the battery to charge from 10 to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes.
The e Sky is expected to be priced at under £20,000 in the UK, positioning it against compact electric models including the Honda Super-N and Renault Twingo.
Suzuki plans to launch three new EVs in Europe by 2030 as it seeks to strengthen its position in the growing electric vehicle market. The e Sky follows the e Vitara, which became Suzuki’s first electric model in Europe.
