Party Constitution Amendment: Election Commission Issues Stern Warning to Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) held hearings on three matters concerning the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PMAP), including objections related to its intra-party elections, financial statements and amendments to the party constitution.
The hearing was conducted by a four-member commission headed by the Chief Election Commissioner. During the proceedings, the lawyer representing the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party requested additional time to submit detailed arguments, stating that an Election Commission order had already been challenged before the Balochistan High Court.
The lawyer informed the commission that a hearing scheduled for August 26 could not take place and that the next hearing before the Balochistan High Court is scheduled for September 21.
ECP officials, however, pointed out that the Balochistan High Court had issued a stay order regarding the 180-day period granted for conducting intra-party elections. According to the officials, there was no stay order in the other two cases.
The Election Commission directed the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party to submit its response to the objections raised by the commission. Officials also issued a warning that failure to comply could result in a unilateral decision against the party.
During the proceedings, ECP officials expressed concern that the party had repeatedly sought additional time but had still not submitted its response.
The commission ultimately accepted the request of the party’s lawyer for more time and adjourned the hearing until September 15.
The proceedings are part of the Election Commission’s scrutiny of political parties regarding compliance with electoral laws, including intra-party elections, submission of financial details and adherence to their party constitutions.
The commission’s warning indicates that the party may face further legal or administrative action if it fails to respond to the objections within the given timeframe.
