Hayatabad sports complex power supply cut off over outstanding dues

Peshawar: The Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) has disconnected the electricity supply to Hayatabad Sports Complex over outstanding dues exceeding Rs8.9 million, disrupting routine activities and creating difficulties for athletes, visitors and staff at the facility.

According to available information, the electricity connection of the sports complex was disconnected due to the non-payment of accumulated electricity dues. The power suspension has affected the day-to-day functioning of the facility, where sports activities and other public engagements are regularly held.

The Hayatabad Sports Complex is visited by a large number of citizens and athletes on a daily basis. The prolonged power interruption has therefore created difficulties for people who use the facility for sports, exercise and other recreational activities. Athletes training at the complex have also reportedly been affected by the disruption in electricity supply.

The development has raised concerns among sports circles and citizens regarding the financial management of public sports facilities. The disconnection of electricity over outstanding dues has also highlighted the importance of timely payment of utility bills to ensure uninterrupted operations at public institutions.

Electricity is essential for several routine functions at a sports complex, including lighting, administrative operations, water supply systems and other facilities used by athletes and visitors. Any prolonged interruption can consequently affect scheduled activities and create inconvenience for people using the facility.

The outstanding amount of more than Rs8.9 million has also drawn attention to the issue of unpaid utility bills at government and public-sector institutions. The latest action by PESCO indicates that electricity distribution companies are taking measures against consumers with significant outstanding balances.

The power disconnection comes at a time when PESCO has also introduced a new policy concerning electricity benefits for its employees. According to an office order, PESCO’s Board of Directors approved fixed monthly cash allowances to replace the free electricity units currently available to eligible employees.

The decision was approved during the company’s 226th Board meeting held on September 3, 2026, in line with the federal government’s policy regarding the monetisation of free electricity units for employees of power-sector organisations.

Under the new arrangement, eligible PESCO employees will receive monthly cash allowances against their admissible electricity units. The policy will apply to PESCO with effect from August 1, 2026, subject to prescribed terms, conditions and eligibility criteria.

Meanwhile, the disconnection of electricity at Hayatabad Sports Complex has prompted concerns over the impact of unpaid dues on sports activities and public services. Citizens and athletes are now facing uncertainty over when the electricity supply will be restored and routine activities at the facility will resume normally.

The situation has once again highlighted the need for effective financial management and timely settlement of utility bills at public facilities to prevent disruptions in services.
