FBI Arrests New York Woman Over Alleged Capitol Bombing Plot

NEW YORK: The FBI has arrested 35-year-old Jessica Bowie of Albany, New York, over an alleged plot to bomb the New York State Capitol and kill lawmakers.

According to prosecutors, Bowie had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) and repeatedly surveilled the Albany capitol building ahead of the planned attack. She allegedly considered the statehouse an easier target than the White House.

Court documents allege that Bowie told undercover FBI agents she wanted to cause maximum damage to the building and kill senators. Investigators say she planned to conceal a bomb inside a food-delivery bag and use materials purchased from a local hardware store.

Prosecutors said Bowie visited the capitol at least five times on reconnaissance missions and was photographed taking pictures of the building. Undercover agents allegedly supplied her with a fake bomb and a defective firearm as part of the investigation.

The FBI also alleges that Bowie had knives and a written oath of allegiance to IS when she was arrested. Investigators say she had used social media to promote anti-American messages and praise the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Bowie has been charged with providing material support or resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization. The allegations have not been proven in court, and it remains unclear whether she will contest the charges.
